The research programme of the Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Pharmacy is aimed at identifying and characterising innovative drugs involved in the control of cell proliferation and apoptosis, neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric illnesses, tuberculosis, and parasitic (malaria, leishmania) and viral (HIV and HCV) infections. The laboratory has brought important contributions to the field of medicinal chemistry applied to signal transduction and cell cycle control, and has extensive expertise in bioinformatics.

The Department has well trained staff with expertise and knowledge of drug discovery and drug formulations. Several active collaborations have been established with pharmacology and structural biology laboratories and with pharmaceutical companies with the purpose of developing drug discovery activities. The current programmes have industry links (Sigma-Tau, NeuroSearch, GSK, SienaBiotech, Indena).

More than 700 peer reviewed publications in relevant areas of medicinal chemistry. Research facilities available consist of 12 laboratories for synthesis, 1 laboratory for computational chemistry, 1 laboratory for combinatorial chemistry and 3 laboratories for structural analysis. Laboratories are fully equipped with all necessary facilities for combinatorial and standard organic synthesis and bioinformatics. Scientists are subdivided in 6 WGs.
