RESEARCH INTERESTS

My current research interests are focused on the design and synthesis of biologically active molecules that act at the cellular membrane level.

In particular:

  1. The design and synthesis of antiprotozoal (antileishmanial, antimalarial) and antineoplastic ether phospholipids and studies on their conformations and interactions with membranes
  2. The synthesis of novel lipid molecules which will can be used as delivery systems for known drug molecules in the therapy of cancer and viral infections and in particular HIV
  3. The design and synthesis of novel neurosteroids possessing anxiolytic, anticonvulsant or neuroprotective activity
  4. The design and synthesis of novel benzoxazine analogues that possess antiarrhythmic or neuroprotective activity
  5. Reactive oxygen species scavengers with multifunctional pharmacological profile
  6. Development of synthetic methodology
